For Stonewall 25, Klein made the mile-long Rainbow Flag the predominant image for the historic 25th anniversary of the LGBT rights movement. As national communications director and spokesperson for GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), Klein played a pivotal role in the coming out of actress Ellen Degeneres by orchestrating much of the international coverage. Alan Klein’s involvement in social justice issues has consistently been a focal point of his life. He was a founding member of the AIDS activist group ACT UP and co-founded Queer Nation. His early activism helped propel him toward a career in public relations, which began in 1990 when he and fellow ACT UP member Jay Blotcher co-founded Public Impact Media Consultants, a firm devoted to promoting the missions of many of the nation’s leading social change organizations.
